Correction the book name is "Behind the Candelabra." Also did I hear right on that interview that Scott claims he is not currently gay? I heard him mention a lady friend he was dating I think. I swear I heard him say he was not gay, although he said he was in the book. Wierd!

Hi, I happened to turn it onto Larry King when he was interviewing Scott Thorson-ex lover of Liberace. The interview was fascinating and Scott seemed to be upfront and honest about everything. I purchased Scott's book "Behind the Candelera" and just finished it. Great book! Although i think some of the things we read about other people need to be taken with a grain of salt, it doesn't surprise me why Liberace was so adament about keeping his private life private. Nowadays I don't think people would have cared if he was gay or not honestly. Liberace was too worried about what other people thought. I would like to email Scott Thorson and ask him some questions-would anybody happen to know how to correspond with him? Thank you.

In regards to Liberace... I'll go along with the fact that he was not famous for his acting, singing, songwriting, or record sales. But his piano playing was HARDLY "ridiculous." I'm a piano player myself and I know of very few people who are able to bring the kind of life and whimsy to the ivories that Lee did. He was a wonderful interpreter as well. He could play any imaginable style or interpret a single song 20 different ways. As a technical player, he was RIGHT ON and unlike even some of the most renowned pianists, he had the ability to make a piano SING. There's more to piano playing than just notes on a page, it's also about feeling and heart. And Liberace is miles above the rest in all areas of good pianistics.

We are delighted that Scott Thorson, who claims to be Liberace's lover is going to appear on Larry King Live Monday, August 12th and would like the promote the interview extensively. I am in charge of promoting it via the Internet and wanted to know if your site would help promote the tribute to Liberace show on your web site? This would be done by putting something on your site as simple as "Watch a show about Liberace featuring the man who claims to be his lover, Scott Thorson for the full hour on CNN's Larry King Live on Monday August 12, 2002 at 9 p.m. EST. For more information, please visit www.cnn.com/larryking" If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me or call me at 202-898-7695. Stumbled across Mike Walsh's story on Willie O'Ree ("Soul on Ice") as I was intrigued by the summary on the 'net: "Willie O'Ree: First African American in the NHL." great article. problem with it is, though, is the fact that Mr. O'Ree isn't American, or African American for that matter. He was born in Canada.

Willie O'Ree was and is one of the finest persons that ever laced up a pair of skates, what a joy to have him as an ambassador to the NHL. I followed the old Western League living in Calgary and following the Stampeders when they played in the Corral I'M sure Willie would remember that I would like to send him an e mail but I can't do this from our library perhaps someone could hook me up with him Don Edy Thanks Willie

Thank You! This artical was great! I saw Liberace in Vegas back in '84 and loved every minute of it. He was a great performer and a great musician. His showmanship made the show easy to watch and enjoy for everyone. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen to this day!

I was working for Prestige Motors in Las Vegas in 1979, when I met Scott Thorson and Liberace. I helped Scott drive two MG Midgets over to Lee's house. It was an eye opening experience to say the least.I don't believe that the relationship was at it's peak during those times. Liberace was absolutely livid with Scott for even asking him to buy the two cars. I think it was sort of like a mother telling a child "no" when the child wants to buy everything in sight. There was a great deal of controversy over the relationship between Scott and Liberace, and I don't believe it has ever gone away.

We are the prison of detention of pre-trial in Hessen/Germany,in 1993 partly destroyed by until today presumend unknown terorrists. It's very important for us to learn the history of prison. Since the Amsterdam "rasphuis" and "spinnhuis" this fight between "security and revange supporters" and volunteers who tried to "help" prisoners to find back to social life is not finished. Nowhere I found such an exact description of Phildadelphia Penitantiary. The JVA Weiterstadt is, we think so, very human and social state items adapted prisons in Germany. Visitors from all over the world are coming. We are looking for worldwide connections for discussing ways of developping detention for resocialising aims. Best Greetings. One was from i beleive was from the discovery channel, and the other on MTV's FEAR. I am interested to know if there is more information on this. If so where can I get it? And Where can I find out more of the history about the prison itself?

i think konigstiger(what in the hell kind of name is that?) wants to sound like an authority on pro hockey during the time of Mr. O'Ree, however it quite obvious he never saw him skate nor did he witness the bullshit this Man dealt with to pursue his dream of playing professional hockey. he (kon-whatever) says "perhaps he was not good enough". I'd like to know if he was there, did he see him play? If not he's just blowing smoke, another thing, while his pro hockey career may be a footnote to him and white media here in the us, his attaining of HIS goal, albeit short, is a helluva accomplishment, and with only one good eye!. I'll admit I was only 3 days old with he made his pro debut, but I got the opportunity him two years ago, and I'll bet my bottom dollar he's in better shape than the average Athelete who happened to play Any sport during the same era. He's a Man's Man, and all Real Men respect that, black, white or whatever. One more thing, the whole us does not have to "take a real interest" in order for a Black Man to be a dominant figure in a sport. If you don't believe it, I got two words for him(kon-whatever),Tiger Woods.

Willie O'Ree receives only a passing note in the history of the NHL because he IS merely a footnote. Don't forget that at the time there were only a handful of clubs, as opposed to today's watered-down NHL. He may have had all the tools, but perhaps he still was not good enough. There are many more players today, including Blacks and other minorities. Until the U.S. takes a real interest in the sport, naturally Whites will be the predominant face of the league.

realy interesting reading. Being a correctional officer myself, and speaking to older officers in the past i am of the opinion that the older tougher ways were much preferred by staff and prisoners alike. Older type prisoners have told me,that they new exactly where they stood during the old prison system. Unlike now, were we are trying out the relatively new care bear approach into correcting offending behaviour. I believe you in the states have been down the same roadand have resorted back to the old way punishment,is that true? I would be happy to receive any comments you have to make regarding the prison system over there in the states. all the best CLIFF.

I feel in love with hockey at the University of Maine. What a hell of a hockey program! What athletic talent and performance! Although Willie O'Ree are of two different nationalities, we share the same color: black. And the love of the same sport: hockey. A movie should be made of his life. He merited it! Somewhere out there are many black Americans just loaded with talent for hockey. I have none. Hockey, like the rest of sports, will be dominated by blacks in the future! I know it is going to happen! In order for black Americans to develop an interest in hockey, they must be introduced to it at an early age in their communities and at school!

I think it is important for people to understand the effect my father had on blacks in sports espically hockey. He now continues to open doors by being the director of youth development for the NHL and the diverstiy task force. He still does skate today and is in charge of many hockey clinics. He is a role model to me as my father and to many other children.

I saw Wanda in a small concert in Altus, OK in, I believe 1980-81. Having been a Wanda Fan for many years, I was pleased to find that she has lost none of her fantastic ability. I'm a child of the 50's/60's and was hooked as a fan from the very first song I heard her sing. All of that beauty and talent has not faded. I'm a diehard fan until one of us departs for the heavenly choir. My appreciation to Wanda for the definite improvement she made to both rock and country music. With her talent I believe she could make a "comeback" at any time she had the inkling. Thank You, Ms. Jackson, for some beautiful music and bright spots in an otherwise rather boring life. spots in an otherwise rather boring life.

Man In The Basement has got to be the weirdest story I have read online. I Loved It!

I liked "The Man in The Basement" it was interesting, entertaining, and gave an exaggerated view of human resources and corporate culture, making it a good article.

Soul On Ice by Mike Walsh. Willie O'Ree is not an African American. He is Canadian. You see, in Canada anyone and everyone is allowed to play hockey no matter what race, religion or financial status. That's the way it should be everywhere.

I've only read the first two sections of Snow White, but I think it's really good. It still follows the story, but the modern touch really livens it up. Excellent job. :) :)

Hello Wanda Jackson,
I just found your site. It is good to find you after not hearing about you. You should remember me if you recall a meeting at Johnson AB, Japan just before you went to Okinawa. We rode part of the way there together. I am into music as a writer, producer, publisher and mix of other things. Are you planning any new albums? I have a couple of song I would like to submit to you. Let's talk.

Enjoyed your essay on the Shaggs. Check out a cover of "Philosophy of the World" that I did. It's harmonious and jangly. You can find a RealAudio stream of it at http://home.att.net/~bblash/page2.html or download an mp3 of it http://hitme.net/prozak/World.mp3 Anyway, keep up the good work.

I would just like to commend you on your site. It's about time someone put up a web site on Willie O'Ree. I have always been interested in the history of hockey, and Willie O'Ree is definitely part of hockey history. Again, nice work.

Mike, I just read your Liberace article and I think you are a fine writer. I brought up the pages expecting to laugh at the xtreme rantings of a fan of a rather, ahem... extreme performer -- and, instead, I found a touching and insightful essay on one of the most amazing constructions of this century: "Lee".
Brian   23/Feb/1999:03:38:05

Before I read youre article, I had heard of Willie O'ree but didnt know anything about him. After reading it, it is obvious that Willie is very important in the history of hockey. Thanks!
